Pasen iTouch LE demo video does it again: makes us scream in apathyFiled under: Portable Audio, Portable Video Oh Pasen, how you entertain us so! In the company's latest update to the familiarly designed iTouch, the iTouch LE includes a new, faster JZ4732 chipset that they say allows the unit to play 30FPS, unconverted video with less strain on the battery. With 4GB of internal storage (memory card support up to 32GB), voice recording, and support for RM, RMVB, AVI, DIVX, FLV, DAT, ASF, MP4, WMV, 3GP, MPG, and SWF, this $79 unit may just be coming around on something good. The UI isn't any prettier than before, but at these prices, who's complaining? Spot the video after the break if you're still with us. ASUS looks to clear out Eee PC 900s with $100 rebateFiled under: Laptops ASUS's newest, Atom-based 900 series Eee PCs may be fast approaching availability, but it looks like the company is still doing its best to get as many plain old Celeron-based Eee PC 900s out the door as possible, with it now offering up a $100 rebate on the already low-priced laptop. That brings the price down to $449, which is certainly a decent enough bargain compared to the $599 the updated Eee PC 901 will supposedly be going for -- Amazon price mix-ups notwithstanding. From the looks of it, both Amazon and ZaReason are offering in the rebate (good 'til July 31th) at the moment, but we'd expect the offer to start showing up at other retailers before too long as well.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsCategories: Mobile Tech
WeHo: You May Now Ride Bikes on the Sidewalks The times are a'changin': West Hollywood is set to end its long, but typically unenforced, ban on bicycle riding on city sidewalks, reports the Los Angeles Times' Bob Pool. Referring to WeHo's streets as pedestrian-packed (by LA standards?), Pool points out sidewalk riding will be allowed in areas without bike lanes, and that bikers will be expected to share the cement with walkers. Los Angeles already allows sidewalk biking (except in parts of Venice), Beverly Hills doesn't permit bikes in its business district (Rodeo Drive?), and Santa Monica prohibits them entirely on sidewalks. Also in today's LA Times, a piece on the surge of bicycle purchases in LA; Santa Monica's Cynergy Cycles has seen a 20% uptick in the past month. Sad sidenote: Bike demand was witnessed firsthand by this Curbed editor, whose bike was stolen in broad daylight last week in front of Rosewood Ave., near Western Avenue. Damn thieves cut the bike cord. Via flickr user mike_1630 Categories: Random Fun

Vodafone New Zealand's iPhone pricing taking a lot of heatSo we're getting the impression that there are a lot of Kiwis out there who think they're getting a raw deal from Vodafone on the iPhone 3G. That wouldn't totally surprise us -- they know when they've got an exclusive on a hot item, and they're going to try to milk it for everything it's worth -- but with the Rogers fallout rumors flying, Voda might want to tread lightly here. Anyway, here's out it breaks down: on a maxed-out plan, you get a 16GB iPhone 3G for $349 and pay $250 a month, which nets you 600 anytime minutes, 600 texts, and 1GB of data. That works out to $264 for the phone and $189 for the plan in US currency, so you get a little bit of a break on the phone (AT&T charges $299), but in exchange, you get totally hosed beyond comprehesnion on the plan. Americans shelling out $149.99 will get unlimited voice, unlimited data, and unlimited texts, for which they'll gladly pay the $35 extra up front we'd imagine -- so yeah, by our voodoo calculations, that's about a raw a deal as any we've seen. New To Market: A Gregory Ain in Mar Vista
Gregory Ain fans, rejoice. An original Ain-designed Mar Vista Tract Home, one of 52 houses in the Historic Preservation Overlay Zone, has hit the market. While renovated and landscaped, the three-bedroom, one-bath house on Beethoven Street has "all the original features...including built-ins, concrete floors, doors, clerestory windows and sliding partition walls between rooms." The house is protected under the Mills Act and the list price is $1.1 million. Bonus: A run down of the renovations is after the jump. Renovations: -Complete interior cosmetic restoration, including removal of previous carpet and asbestos floor tiles, polished concrete floors, new base boards, new door hardware, new light fixtures. Meanwhile, what we liked reading about Ain's designs: "Ain read some of Dr. Benjamin Spock’s writings on parenting and incorporated what he learned in the design of the cabinetry separating the kitchen, entry hall and living room, according to Anthony Denzer, an architect who is writing his doctoral dissertation on Ain. Denzer explains that since women at the time spent so much time in the kitchen, Ain felt the area needed to be open so that the mother could keep an eye on the children playing in the living room and out in the yard." · 3500 Beethoven [MLS] Categories: Random Fun
Mindset Six50 solar electric concept is light, green, and a bit homelyFiled under: Transportation As the big auto manufacturers scramble to come up with fuel-efficient alternatives for us gas addicts, smaller companies are swooping in with both concepts and production models. In the latter category, we have Mindset AG with the solar electric Six50 concept you see here. The 2+2 seater is designed to weigh just 1,764 pounds and measures about 13 feet long with a slab of solar panels over its haunches. Designer Mura Güntak expects the Six50 to run just about 62 miles per charge (although an optional generator can be added to extend this), do 0-60 in 7 seconds, and plans to roll out 10,000 of these bad boys by 2009 at the cost of $78,000 each. Massive, Coordinated Patch To the DNS Releasedtkrabec alerts us to a CERT advisory announcing a massive, multi-vendor DNS patch released today. Early this year, researcher Dan Kaminsky discovered a basic flaw in the DNS that could allow attackers easily to compromise any name server; it also affects clients. Kaminsky has been working in secret with a large group of vendors on a coordinated patch. Eighty-one vendors are listed in the CERT advisory (DOC). Here is the executive overview (PDF) to the CERT advisory — text reproduced at the link above. There's a podcast interview with Dan Kaminsky too. His site has a DNS checker tool on the top page. "The issue is extremely serious, and all name servers should be patched as soon as possible. Updates are also being released for a variety of other platforms since this is a problem with the DNS protocol itself, not a specific implementation. The good news is this is a really strange situation where the fix does not immediate reveal the vulnerability and reverse engineering isn't directly possible."

Mio gets official with Knight Rider GPS unitFiled under: GPS Mio has understandably not been very shy about showing off its new Knight Rider-themed GPS unit, but the company has now finally gotten its official business out of the way and provided all the details on the device's US launch. In case you somehow managed to miss it, the device itself is basically a mid-range Moov in disguise, with some red LEDs and, most importantly, William Daniels' instantly recognizable voice helping to make you feel just a little bit more like Michael Knight as you traverse the U.S. and Canada with the aid of the pre-loaded maps. As we had heard, however, you'll still have to wait until a bit later in this quarter to get your hands on one, when it'll set you back a reasonable $270. W3C's Role In the Growth of a Proprietary WebPaul Ellis writes "Mozilla's Asa Dotzler has said 'It's really hard for me to believe that either [Microsoft or Adobe] have the free and open Web at heart when they're actively subverting it with closed technologies like Flash and Silverlight.' But are they really subverting it? Where is the line between serving the consumer and subverting the Web? This blog post makes the case that the W3C's glacial process should share in the blame for the growth of proprietary technologies."

Sprint's Treo 800w manual goes online, all 436 spellbinding pages of itFiled under: Handsets, Palm, Windows Mobile, EV-DO, CDMA Very rarely does a Palm handset go fully under the radar all the way through to the official announcement (if ever?), and now that we have a user's manual, we can pretty much declare the impending Treo 800w fully, completely, and utterly scooped. This is definitely the real deal, too, coming straight off Sprint's site -- not to say anyone would go to the trouble of faking their own -- and unveils no real surprises that we can see. The usual Windows Mobile 6.1 interface with Palm customizations, conservative styling (we're being generous there), and typical array of Sprint add-ons like Sprint TV are going to make this a safe, easy choice for the well-starched suit in your life, and that's about it. Not to say we have a problem with well-starched suits; Engadget corporate policy requires that we wear them at all times, actually.
